The Abominations of the Canaanites

Introduction:

An abomination is something that causes extreme disgust or loathing; something repugnant or shameful, detestable.  These are very strong words but ones our God used to describe what the Canaanites commonly practiced.  These practices were all used by the Canaanites to know the future.  Israel was to rely instead upon God’s revealed will.

Body:

I.             What Were These Abominations?

·         Deuteronomy 18:9-14   Both the objects and practices of the Canaanites were to be completely abhorred by the Israelites.

·         “Pass through the fire”   Deuteronomy 12:29-31   This practice was done to inquire of the gods.  Molech worshippers practiced this.  Leviticus 18:21

·         “Divination, witchcraft, interpreter of omens”   They were reading tea leaves, reading entrails of animals to gain information.  Ezekiel 21:21   Today reading palms, using crystal balls, and Tarot cards are used.

·         “Sorcerer, one who casts a spell,” is one who uses potions and spells.

·         “Medium or spiritist is one who calls up the dead.”  They pretend to inquire of the dead for information especially about the future.  Today we have the “Psychic Hotline.”

All of these were reprehensible to Jehovah.

II.           What Would God Do About It?

·         “Drive them out.” Genesis 15:15-16, 18-21   The Amorites include all inhabitants of Canaan.  God would punish them when their sin was so great it could not be tolerated.                          Deuteronomy 7:1-5, Deuteronomy 9:4-5

·         God’s mercy prevailed toward Canaan in the days of Abraham; but mercy turned to punishment in the days of Moses.

·         Jehovah was not being cruel but was doing the world a favor by destroying these extremely wicked people.

III.         Who Was the Prophet He Would Raise Up?

·         The Prophet  John 6:14

·         Hear God’s Son, not Moses.  Matthew 17:1-5

·         The Apostle Peter applied this prophecy to Christ.  Acts 3:20-24

·         Stephen also quoted this in Acts 7:37.   See also Acts 7:52.

Conclusion:

Jesus is God’s final spokesman.  Hebrews 1:1-2   It is imperative that we listen to Jesus.  Hebrews 2:1-3
