Christ
Our Passover
Introduction:
Jesus is
the central figure in the Bible, especially in the Passover.
Many principles in the Passover point to Christ.
1.
Exodus 12- the Passover begins
a.
the book of Exodus describes
how God freed his people from Egyptian slavery. Because
Pharaoh's heart was hardened, God punished Egypt with 10
plagues. As God was about to send the 10th and final plague,
he gave commands to his people on how to escape the
destruction of the firstborn so they would not be killed.
b.
The Passover sacrifice was a
male lamb, without blemish, to be sacrificed in the late
afternoon (Exodus 12: 3-6). No bones of the lamb were to be
broken (Exodus 12: 46). The blood of the lamb was to be
spread around the door frame of the houses where the
Passover meal was to be eaten (Exodus 12: 7). The meal was
to be eaten that night along with unleavened bread and
bitter herbs (Exodus 12: 8- 10). They were to eat in a
hurry, ready to leave Egypt at any moment (Exodus 12: 11).
The blood around the door frames would be a sign to God, and
He would “pass over” their houses and not destroy the
firstborn (Exodus 12: 13). The Passover celebration was to
be repeated throughout the generations as a memorial forever
(Exodus 12: 14).
2.
The Passover and Christ (Exodus
12: 1-2)
a.
The feast marked a new year and
a new beginning in Christ, every believer is a new creation
(2 Corinthians 5: 17 ).
b.
The Passover lamb had to be
without blemish (Exodus 12: 5). Christ, our Passover, was
inspected by the pilot, Herod, Annas, and Caiaphas. None
could find fault (John 1: 29; 1 Peter 1: 18-21; 1 Peter 2:
21- 24 ).
c.
Jesus was sacrificed and died
the same night as the Passover lamb (Mark 15:42, Luke 23:54,
and John 19:31 & 42).
d.
The Passover was to be kept as
a remembrance of how God had delivered them from Egyptian
slavery.
e.
Jesus instituted the Lord's
supper at the Passover (Luke 22: 19- 20). Every first day of
the week, when we partake of the Lord's supper (Acts:20:7),
we remember how our Passover lamb died for us on the cross
and shed his blood.
Conclusion:
Revelation 7:13-17 depicts a great scene of the saved in
Christ. It is never too late for those whose sins have never
been washed away in baptism to accept Jesus as their
Passover.
