Tell Of God’s
Wonderful Works (Psalm 105)
Introduction:
each of us here today should recognize we all benefit from all the
great deeds the Lord has done. This will serve as motivation and
encouragement to live as a member of God's family. Psalm 105 is a
“historical Psalm” that depicts the Lord's dealings with his people,
especially those described in the 1st 5 Books of the Bible.
Text: Psalm 105
1.
A Call to Give Thanks to the Lord
(verses 1-6).
a.
The tone is one of gladness- “call upon
his name.” (verse 1). Especially in public worship, “make known his
deeds”- like the joyful cries of a herald bringing good tidings to
Zion (Psalms 9: 1- 2).
b.
It is important to praise him in song
(Isaiah 12: 4- 6). As well as to seek God's presence and his
strength.
2.
The Lord keeps his Covenant (verses 7-
11)
a.
(verse 7) God has “displayed” his
judgments and all the earth. (Isaiah 26: 9). He remembers his
covenant forever (verse 8 ).
b.
This is the covenant he made with
Abraham (verses 9- 11). See also Psalm 106: 41-45 and Luke 1: 72-75
(Zacharias).
3.
The Lord watched over his people while
they wandered in Canaan (verses 12-15).
a.
When God promised Abraham, they were
only a small group (Genesis 34). They were Wanderers - sojourners
(Hebrews 11: 8- 9).
b.
God watched over his people (Genesis
35: 5). Consider the example of Abimelech (Genesis 20).
c.
Abraham is called a prophet (Genesis
20: 7).
d.
“Anointed ones “- specially selected to
be his people.
4.
The Lord Brought Israel to Egypt
(verses 16- 23)
a.
the account of Joseph- God “had
sent”-God had planned it (Genesis 45: 5).
b.
Joseph went from being a slave in
Potiphar's house to being in prison (verse 18). Where he interpreted
dreams (verse 19 ). Joseph's affliction was a time of testing.
c.
Joseph then became next in command to
Pharaoh (verses 20- 22), and by God's care, Israel came to Egypt
(Genesis 4: 6; 5- 6).
5.
The Lord Brought his people out of
Egypt (verses 24- 38)
a.
God's people multiplied greatly (Exodus
1: 7). But they were despised by the Egyptians.
b.
The Lord “sent” Moses and Aaron, who
performed signs and miracles to demonstrate that Jehovah had sent
them (verse 27).
c.
(Verses 28- 36) The plagues showed the
superiority of God over the gods of Egypt. The 9th plague is listed
first possibly because it seemed to overcome the resistance of most
Egyptians (Exodus 11:3).
d.
Israel brought great riches out of
Egypt (Exodus 12: 35- 36). The Egyptians were glad the Israelites
left!
6.
The Lord Brought his People to Canaan
(verses 39- 45 ).
a.
(Verses 39- 41) describes how God cared
for his people in the desert (psalms 78: 13-16).
b.
God made good on his promise to Abraham
to establish his people in the land of Canaan.
c.
The Israelites inherited vineyards and
orchards from the Canaanites (verses 44).
d.
God did all this in order that the
people could live faithfully under his care (2 kings 17: 35-39).
Conclusion:
Psalm 105 is a Psalm of gratitude for all the Lord has done. It
should serve as an encouragement to us to trust God to fulfill his
promises.
