King James Version
Colossians

Colossians 2:10-13

10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

Church of Christ Expository Sermons on the Book of Colossians

Sermon/Lesson Title

The Church at Colossi
Colossians Lesson 1

Written during Paul’s first Roman imprisonment (AD 61–63), Colossians addresses believers in Asia Minor facing errors about Christ. From greetings (1:1–8), the letter insists the fullness of deity dwells in Jesus and His gospel alone produces faith, love, hope, and fruit—truth that frees, completes, and steadies the church for today.

Citizens of the Kingdom
 Colossians 1:9-14 Lesson 2

After Paul reminds the Colossian Christians about what the gospel, the truth, has produced, he then informs them about the Kingdom of Christ.  He tells of the entrance into it, the blessing of being a citizen and how one is to live while in the kingdom of Christ.

The Book of Colossians Lesson 3
Colossians 1:15-18

Near the end of His ministry Jesus asked, “What do you think about the Christ?” (Matthew 22:42). Paul answers from prison: Christ stands above all and over all. Colossians 1:15–18 reveals why He is preeminent and how that truth reshapes daily discipleship.

The Book of Colossians Lesson 4
Colossians 1:19-23

Reconciliation is a word that warms the heart and gives us a reason to rejoice when two former good friends, who have been enemies for years, have been reconciled and are enjoying friendship again; when a father and a son, who haven’t spoken in years, have been brought back together as a family once again; and when a husband and wife, separated for a long time, have been reconciled as God intended.  These are all occasions of joy and happiness.

The Mystery of God
Colossians: Lesson 5 Col 1:24 – 2:1-3

Many in the church at Colossi were being confronted with those who said Jesus wasn’t truly God, that He was not sufficient to save them, that they needed some “secret knowledge,” known to only a few, to reach heaven.  In our text, Paul reflects this latter teaching and scripture that the “mystery” has been fully revealed in the gospel.

Complete in Christ
Colossians:  Lesson 6   Colossians 2:4-10

We can become unfaithful and fall from favor in God’s eyes.  The answer or remedy is Christ.  He’s all we need.  We must be rooted and grounded in Him; we must walk in Him.  We must stay close to Him at all times and not follow afar off as Peter did.  We must remain committed to His truth and submit to His authority.  These preventive steps will keep us from wandering away from the One in Whom all the fullness of the Godhead dwells.

Alive in Christ
Colossians Lesson 7

Paul had just reminded the Christians in Colosse that all blessings resided in Christ.  He was sufficient to meet every spiritual need.  He now stressed that spiritual life can only be found in Christ Jesus, but that there are essentials for one being alive in Christ.

Let No One
Colossians:  Lesson 8   Colossians 2:16-23

The Christians in Colosse were being told by some that they needed to adopt certain principles and practices from various religions in order to be saved.  These were necessary, they were told, to supplement the gospel of Christ.  In our text, Paul very forcefully informs Christians that the gospel is sufficient and all other religions are from man, not God.

Living In Christ
Colossians:  Lesson 9   Colossians 3:1-11

What does this new life in Christ look like?  It is far different than a life lived according to traditions of men or worldly philosophies.  This new life is dramatically different.

A New Wardrobe
Colossians:  Lesson: 10   Colossians 3:12-14

Most of us are concerned about how we look.  Our appearance is important to us.  We want our clothes to match, to be coordinated.  However, there is something far more important to God.  He’s concerned about how we adorn the doctrine of God, our Savior.

Do All in the Name of the Lord
Colossians:  Lesson 11   Colossians 3:15-17

Paul addresses the saints in Colossi about a vitally important topic – authority in religion.  There were those in Colossi who were saying there were other sources of authority: the Law of Moses, philosophies and religions of men, mysticism, and such like.  Paul stresses that there is only one source of authority in religion; that is Jesus Christ!

Should Being in Christ Affect How You Live Each Day
Colossians Lesson 12

Colossians proclaims Christ's sufficiency and presses it into everyday relationships. In 3:18–4:1, Paul applies the lordship of Jesus to homes and workplaces: wives and husbands, children and fathers, servants and masters. This lesson explores how being in Christ reshapes submission, love, obedience, integrity, and justice for God’s glory in life.

Those Who are Outside
Colossians:  Lesson 13   Colossians 4:2-6

Colossians 4:2–6 calls disciples to love those outside Christ. Paul outlines a fourfold path: continue earnestly in prayer, walk in wisdom, redeem the time, and speak with gracious, seasoned words. This lesson urges vigilant hearts and intentional lives that open doors for the gospel and restore the wandering to hope.

Lessons From First Century Christians
Lesson 14   Colossians 4:7-18   Colossians Series:

Hebrews 12:1–2 calls us to run with endurance, surrounded by a cloud of witnesses. In Colossians 4:7–18, real first-century believers—Tychicus, Onesimus, Aristarchus, Mark, Justus, Epaphras, Luke, even Demas—model trust, service, prayer, comfort, perseverance, and warning. Their lives urge us to mature, encourage, labor, and finish faithful in Christ with hope.
