The
Word of God is one of the greatest blessings ever given to mankind. Its
value is beyond measure. Let’s examine why:
1)
God’s Word Is Powerful
2)
Write God’s
Word on Your Heart
3)
Speak the
Word
For us to receive the power
and strength found in God’s Word, we must possess the right heart, the right
kind of soil. We must do as James 1:21 instructs:
15 But sanctify]the
Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone
who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.

Paul told young Timothy in
II Timothy 2:15 that to meet God’s approval, he must
“rightly divide the word of truth” to interpret accurately and
correctly. It is possible to so misinterpret or twist the Scriptures that
spiritual destruction is our end. (II
Timothy 2:15)
“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need
to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
NKJV
(II
Peter 3:14-16)
“Therefore,
beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in
peace, without spot and blameless; and consider that the longsuffering of
our Lord is salvation – as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the
wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in all his epistles,
speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to
understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own
destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.”
NKJV
So we see
clearly that it is not enough to just know the Scriptures, we must reason
correctly from them. We must properly interpret their message. Use
common sense. An excellent example of this lack of proper reasoning is that
of many 1st Century Jews. The evidence was there in the Old
Testament Scriptures. They had all the facts that Jesus was indeed the
Messiah. Yet most did not recognize or accept Him. They were responsible.
Jesus told them their problem.
“For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about a Me.”
John 5:46 No, just
being acquainted with the Word isn’t sufficient; one must understand it.
Aim:
To examine the
importance of context Example: in understanding the Scriptures The context
is the most important principle in interpreting a Bible passage.

Recently, John MacArthur wrote, “From the very beginning, the battle between
good and evil has been a battle for the truth.” Note Genesis 3:1-5.
“Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord
God had made. And he said to the woman, ‘Has God indeed said, You shall not
eat of every tree of the garden?’ And the woman said to the serpent, ‘We
may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree
which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat it, nor
shall you touch it, lest you die.’ Then the serpent said to the woman, ‘You
will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes
will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’ ”
NKJV
Satan succeeded in getting Eve to question the truthfulness of God’s
instruction. This has been his tactic ever since: to cast doubt on God’s
straightforward revelation, to get people to question whether God’s Word is
clear enough to be certain about what it teaches.

Whenever we begin to open the Word of
God to come to an understanding of it,
let us be like Ezra of old. “For
Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the
Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to
teach statutes and ordinances in
Israel.”NKJV Ezra

Listen to the words of this great old hymn: “Earth holds no treasure but
perish with using, However precious they be; Yet there’s a country to which
I am going, Heaven holds all to me.”
Text:
Hebrews 4:11-13
Heaven Holds All To Me
1.
Earth holds no treasure but perish with using, However precious they be;
Yet there’s a country to which I am going, Heaven holds all to me.
2.
Out on the hills of that wonderful country, Happy contented and free,
Angels are waiting and watching my coming, Heaven holds all to me.
3.
Why should I long for the world and its sorrows, When in that home o’er the
sea Millions are singing the wonderful story? Heaven holds all to me.
Chorus:
Heaven holds all to me, Brighter its glory will be; Joy without measure
will be my treasure, Heaven holds all to me.

Hebrews 11:16
“But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God
is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.”

Parable of the Sower/Soils: Matthew
13 Matthew 13:3-9 “Then
He spoke many things to them in
parables, saying: ‘Behold, a sower went
out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed
fell by the wayside; and the birds came
and devoured them. Some fell on stony
places, where they did not have much
earth; and they immediately sprang up
because they had no depth of earth. But
when the sun was up they were scorched,
and because they had no root they
withered away. And some fell among
thorns, and the thorns sprang up and
choked them. But others fell on good
ground and yielded a crop; some a
hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
He who has ears to hear, let him hear!’

The Need To Read The Bible

A recent study was conducted of two thousand churchgoers with adult children
ages eighteen to thirty. The researchers wanted to know what parenting
practices pay off over the long haul when it came to the faithfulness of
their children. About forty factors were considered that could affect a
child’s moral and spiritual development. The top factor which predicted the
greatest faith- fullness was whether the child regularly read the Bible
while growing up. What can we learn? God’s Word truly changes lives.
Since we know reading the Bible on a regular basis is helpful in keeping us
and our children faithful, what about memorizing God’s Word? Are there also
benefits from memorizing Scripture? The following is a partial list I have
put together from a variety of sources over the years.

It Helps Us See Detail
II.
It Honors God
III.
It Helps Us Triumph over Sin
IV.
It Helps Us Be Conformed in Christ

As a young boy, I well remember
reading about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. I
especially recall his famous sword, Excalibur. Swords have played
an important role in several battles throughout history. The Roman
sword was the gladius, a fearsome weapon in close range combat. Its
tapered point could pierce even heavy metal armor.
The apostle Paul describes the
Christian armor in
Ephesians 6.
All but one are defensive pieces. The only offensive one is the
sword of the Spirit. (Ephesians
6:17)

Fifteen Periods of Bible History

It can be easy to get confused about the chronology of the Bible
events. Did Nehemiah live before Job? Did Isaiah live before or
after the Babylonian captivity? How many years lapsed between the
prophecies of Malachi and the coming of John the Baptist? These
questions can be more easily answered by breaking up Biblical
history into fifteen periods. This will help us become much better
students of God’s Word and better understand God’s plan of
redemption.
[This division
is not original with me, but I cannot find the person who first
presented this separation. It is one that helps my study.]
