Remedy for Sin
I
Introduction - Josh. 24:19-22 –
Life presents numerous choices…
A
Mom’s Day
à What does she want?
1
Mom wants choices for you
2
Mom wants you to make Godly decisions with those choices
3
Why?
Rom. 3:23 – “all have sinned” ; Rom. 6:23 – “Wages of Sin is Death”
a
From the point of accountability onward, the plague of sin is upon
us.
b
No mother wants a plague of death to take their child.
II
To Be Healthy, Man Must Seek A Remedy
A
When physical ailments befall man, He searches for a remedy.
1
2 Kings 5:1
- Naaman (Captain of Assyrian Army) suffered from leprosy
a
Traveled to another country in search of a remedy. (Elisha)
2
Matthew 4:23-25
(Jesus Heals) - People from many places desiring to be healthy.
B
When Spiritual ailments befall man, due to sin, He searches for a
remedy which results in forgiveness.
1
Forgiveness brings the individual back to a healthy state.
2
Man’s sins often cause him to seek forgiveness from other men.
a
Joseph brothers sought forgiveness from Joseph –
Genesis 50:17
b
The prodigal son sought forgiveness from his father.
3
Most importantly, man’s sins cause him to seek forgiveness from God.
a
Pharaoh, Moses, David, Daniel, Israel, men throughout the New
Testament
C
A Doctor is Sought for Those with Terrible Ills
1
A Medical doctor for the physical ills
2
A Spiritual doctor for the soul
3
Jesus stated this in Matthew 9:11-13
a
In these words, Jesus is identified as the spiritual doctor of man.
III
To Be Healthy, Man Must Follow the
Doctor’s Remedy
A
Medical Doctor
1
Broken foot – prescribes a cast or walking boot, no jogging for
awhile
2
Strep Throat – prescribes Antibiotic, clear fluids
3
High Cholesterol – prescribes change in diet and decrease in stress
4
Ailments may range from mild to severe.
B
Jesus’ Remedy is always about sin.
1
The ailment of sin is always severe resulting in death if not
treated.
2
Fortunately, Jesus has the words of life
a
John 6:63 -
It is the spirit
that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak
unto you, are spirit, and are life.
b
They are words of eternal life according to Peter in
vs. 68.
c
John 12:48-50 -
They are the
words which will judge us in the end and are words of the father.
IV
What Remedy has Christ Prescribed for Sin?
A
Blood is the Remedy for Sin
1
Genesis 9:1-4
– From the Patriarchal age, blood is identified with the life of
flesh.
2
Leviticus 17:10-12
– Blood offered is atonement for the soul under the Mosaic Law.
a
What is atonement? Atonement means to cover over.
·
Blood of sacrifices covered over the sins of man.
(i)
More understandably, it enabled forgiveness.
-
Hebrews 9:22 -
And
according to the law, I may almost say, all things are cleansed with
blood, and apart from shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
3
Acts 15:29
– In context of concern of possible false teachings originating from
Jerusalem, Paul and Barnabus were sent from Antioch to verify if
such was true. The apostles and elders affirmed truth and rejected
the false teachings. Then by the Holy Spirit affirmed abstinence of
eating blood as in past ages.
4
Three passages, Three Ages Rejecting the Eating of Blood because of
the Life in it.
a
Now John 6:53 – Jesus instructs
the blood to be drank because of its life!
·
Will revisit this thought… but for now, simply recognize the Blood
is life.
B
A look at blood as the Remedy for Sin in different ages
1
Patriarchal Age - we know little about what God commanded these men.
a
We do know a pleasing offering to God required the shedding of blood
(Cain and Able).
2
Mosaic Age - Blood was a Remedy for sin in the Old Covenant.
a
Exodus 24:8 – “So Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, and
said, “Behold, the blood of the covenant, which the Lord has made
with you in accordance with all these words”.
b
There were 5 types of offerings under the old law:
·
Burnt offerings, meal offerings, peace offerings, sin offerings, and
trespass offerings.
·
The first three were voluntary, the last two mandatory.
·
The sin offering is of great importance to understanding blood as
the remedy for sin.
c
The Sin offering called for different types of sacrifices depending
on the sinner offering.
·
For the High Priest or the nation – Bull without blemish/defect was
offered
·
For Ruler - Male Goat without blemish
·
Female goat or lamb without blemish for the common person
d
What was the process of the sin offering?
·
The sacrifice was offered with the sinners hands upon its head as it
was slain.
(i)
Signified sinner knew the sacrifice should have been him for his own
sins.
e
As mentioned previously the sacrifices were an atonement and forgave
sin
·
Lev 4:20 -
Thus shall he do with the bullock; as he did with the bullock of
the sin-offering, so shall he do with this; and the priest shall
make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven.
(i)
This is repeated three
other times in chapter 4.
·
Important to know is the sin offering was not for deliberate,
defiance against God.
(i)
Such folks were cast out from the people (Numbers15:30-31).
f
The sin offering came before the other
offerings in order to cleanse the sinner.
·
This cleansing of sin enabled the worshipper to be in fellowship
with God.
(i)
As stated in Isaiah 59:1-2 sin
separates man from God.
3
Blood is the Remedy in the Christian Age
a
We do not offer continual animal sacrifices to atone for our sins.
b
Jesus, our Lord and God, came to earth to redeem man from his sins.
·
John the immerser says of him in
John 1:29:
(i)
“Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
·
Hebrew Author states in Heb. 10:12
that Jesus “offered one sacrifice
for sins for all time”
(i)
The sacrifice was Jesus hung on a cross.
(ii)
He was sinless, unblemished, and without defect lamb of mankind.
c
How is it he takes away the sins?
·
Eph. 1:7: “…we
have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our
trespasses, …”
·
2 Cor. 5:21: “Him who knew no sin he made sin on our behalf; that we might
become the righteousness of God in Him.”
·
“Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” –
Christ Shed His Blood for us!
(i)
The Life for all flesh was in the Blood of Christ.
d
What is the difference in the
Remedy for Sins by Blood under the old Covenant vs. the New?
·
At this point we remember
Hebrews 10:4
(i)
This verse does not say it is impossible for the blood of animals to
forgive sins.
(ii)
It says impossible to take away sins.
(iii)
Vs. 3 makes it clear that under the old law
each year the sins were remembered.
·
The difference in the Remedies under the covenants is explained by
Vs. 14-18
(i)
Christ’s sacrifice perfected the sinner for all time (vs.
14).
-
No more would sin offerings be needed to cleanse.
-
Quoting Jeremiah, no more would the sins be remembered.
V
To Be Sin Free, How is the Remedy Administered and How long is it
Applied?
A
Covenants are established by contact with blood.
1
This was true for Noah, Abraham, the children of Israel, and
throughout history.
2
Christ’s blood is identified as the blood of the covenant for
forgiveness of sins in (Mat. 26:28).
a
Knowing this, finding out how the Blood of Christ is administered to
the sinner is easy.
·
Find where the covenant of Christ is entered into by man.
(i)
It will be where sins are forgiven.
(ii)
It will be where Christ’s blood is contacted
b
Acts 2:38, Acts
22:16
– Baptism is identified as the place sins are forgiven.
·
This is the beginning of the covenant.
c
Romans 6:1-7
– Baptism brings man into Christ. (Repeated in
Gal. 3:27)
·
We are baptized into his death, therefore, we are in contact with
his blood.
·
Rev. 7:14
affirms this saying - the saved had washed their robes in the blood
of the lamb.
(i)
The robes are the life deeds of man in contact with the blood.
B
The blood is administered through baptism, but how long does the
Christian stay in contact with it?
1
I John 1:6-9
– As long as we abide in Christ, we are being cleansed.
a
Remember, we are the righteousness of God in Christ (2
Cor. 5:21)
2
This means we are spotless, undefiled, unblemished free from death
plague of sin in Christ.
3
Part of abiding in Christ is seen in
John 6:53, a scripture we were to revisit.
a
This verse says we are to drink the blood of Christ.
b
Is this an opposite command
of abstaining from blood because of the life in it?
·
No.
c
Mat. 26:27-28
- By command of Christ we partake of the fruit of the vine.
·
It represents the covenant blood of Christ.
·
Each week we partake of it to remember Christ and our covenant with
Him.
·
If we do not partake, we disobey his command, and His life is not
in us.
4
Our fellowship breaks with Christ only if we willingly
become defiant of God’s commands.
a
This is when we separate ourselves from the righteousness of Christ.
b
This is when we are put outside the camp of God.
VI
Are You Partaking of the Remedy which Has Been Prescribed?
A
There is a Great Day Coming
1
Life will be yours if you have kept the covenant of blood.
a
You will be spotless before God.
·
You will be eternally healthy.
·
You will be in fellowship with God, His Son, and the Saints.
2
You can choose not to partake of the prescription of blood for your
sins. If so,
a
Heb
10:26-29 - For if we sin wilfully after that we have received
the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more a sacrifice
for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment,
and a fierceness of fire which shall devour the adversaries. A man
that hath set at nought Moses law dieth without compassion on the
word of two or three witnesses: of how much sorer punishment,
think ye, shall he be judged worthy, who hath trodden under foot the
Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant
wherewith he was sanctified an unholy thing, and hath done
despite unto the Spirit of grace?
