What does the
church of Christ teach about the word Amen?
What does the Bible say about
the word Amen?
Amen
Introduction:
Read
Psalms 106:48
Adolph Saphir
commenting on amen in Psalms 106:48 writes that most everyone
knows the literal meaning of ”amen” as “so be it” and…
yet few
consider the deep meaning, the great solemnity, and the abundant
consolation treasured up in this word, which has formed for
centuries the conclusion of the prayers and praises of God’s
people. A word which is frequently used without due thoughtfulness,
and unaccompanied with the feeling which it is intended to call
forth, loses its power from this very familiarity, and though
constantly on our lips, lies bedridden in the dormitory of our soul.
While “amen”
is a short word, it is filled with wonderful truths for us to
discover.
Body:
I. Meaning of the Hebrew Word
Usage
seen in I Kings 1:32-36
“Let it
be so”; “so be it”.
“Amen”
expresses certainty – “so it will be”.
Strong’s
– to be
firm; dependable; trustworthy; established
Note
it’s usage in Deuteronomy 27:14-15, 26 Webster – “solemn
ratification”; “to confirm or verify”
Also,
the word can carry the idea of expressing absolute trust and
confidence. See Genesis 15:5-6. When someone believes God and
His promises, his response is “amen” or “so it will be.”
II.
“Amen” in the New Testament
(Transliterated in the New Testament)
In the
four accounts of the gospel, “Amen” is used only by Jesus.
Matthew 5:18 “Assuredly” – “Amen”
Matthew 16:28, 18:3, John 5:25, 8:58 – When “amen” is at the
beginning
of a
statement, this is an important and trustworthy statement. Listen
closely!
Through
Christ, God’s purposes are established and His promises are
certain. II Corinthians 1:17-21 Promises: Yes – certain; Amen
– They are accomplished. Promises such as joy, peace,
forgiveness, fellowship, strength and hope are all blessings in
Christ.
Read:
Revelation 1:7 “This will most certainly come to
pass.” Revelation 22:20 “Let it be so.”
Jesus is
the Amen. Revelation 3:14 He is the last word and final
authority.
Invitation:
Amen is
not just a word we say at the end of our prayers. It is a very rich
word. When we say “amen”, let’s make sure we truly mean it.
