The Second Coming of Christ
Introduction:
What does the Word of God actually say about the second
coming of Christ? Ever since He ascended to the Father almost two
thousand years ago, people have awaited His return. Read Acts
1:9-11. The fact of His return is certain. It is referenced almost
three hundred times in the New Testament. Let us turn to the Bible
and it alone to learn about that great event.
Text: I Thessalonians 5:1-11
Body:
I. How Will He Return?
- Personally I Thessalonians 4:16 “For the
Lord Himself will descend from Heaven with a shout, with the
voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God . . .” He
will come in person.
- Visibly Revelation 1:7 “Behold, He is
coming with clouds and every eye will see Him, even they who
pierced Him . . .” Many verses inform readers that Christ will
appear or be revealed. There is no invisible rapture.
- With power and glory Matthew 25:31 “When
the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with
Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.” That will be
a glorious day for Christ.
II. When Will He Return?
No man knows!
- Unexpectedly and Without Warning I
Thessalonians 5:2-3 “For you yourselves know perfectly that the
day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night . . . “ There
will be no signs.
- Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins
Matthew 25:13 “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor
the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.”
- In Replying to the Disciples’ Question
about the end of the age, Christ replies: “But of that day and
hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father
only.” Matthew 24:36 “Watch therefore, for you do not know what
hour your Lord is coming.” (Verse 42) “Therefore you also be
ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not
expect.” (Verse 44) What is important is to watch and be ready
at all times.
III. What Will Happen When He Comes?
God’s Word informs us that several events will occur when He
comes on the last day, the day of the Lord.
- All the dead will hear Jesus’ voice and be
raised. John 5:28-29
- Death and Hades will be destroyed.
Revelation 20:13-14 Death claims the body when the spirit leaves
it. Hades claims the spirit. The
apostle Paul, in writing about the end, says in
I Corinthians 15:25-26: “For He must
reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. The last
enemy that will be destroyed is death.”
- All the living will be changed. “Behold,
I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all
be changed – in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the
last trumpet . . .” I Corinthians 15:51-52
- The righteous who are alive and those who
are resurrected will meet Jesus in the air. I Thessalonians
4:16-17
- The earth and everything in it will be
destroyed. II Peter 3:10
- Jesus will sit on His throne and judge all
of humanity. Matthew 25:31-33, II Corinthians
5:10
- Jesus will return the Kingdom to the
Father. I Corinthians 15:24 “Then comes the end, when He
delivers the kingdom to God, the Father, when He puts an end to
all rule and all authority and power.”
Conclusion:
Christ’s second coming will end time as we know it and usher
in eternity. His appearing is just as certain as was His first
coming many years ago. We should be looking for His coming. II
Peter 3:12 We should be eagerly waiting for it. I
Corinthians 1:7 We should be doing all we
can to prepare for it. Matthew 25:1-13
Invitation:
Those who are ready when He returns will love His appearing
and rejoice. II Timothy 4:8 Those who do not obey Him in this life
will suffer vengeance at the hand of Christ, Himself. II
Thessalonians 1:5 Begin preparing today if you haven’t
already.
