It’s All about Me
Introduction:
We’ve all heard about the “Me Generation.” It refers to those who are
only concerned about themselves and getting what they want. They are
concerned about their “rights” and not concerned about the
rights of others. If it doesn’t make them feel good, they are not going
to do it. The problem is selfishness and it’s not new. (II
Timothy 3:1-4)
Selfishness even stretches all the way back to Eden. It is seen in the
sins of Adam and Eve. But God desires His people to be mature. You are
mature “when you arrive at and accept the realization that you are not
the center of the universe.”
Body:
I.
Examples of Selfish People
·
Cain (Genesis
4:9)
·
Nabal (I
Samuel 25:3, 10-11)
·
James and John (Mark
10:35-37)
·
Jewish people who followed Jesus for food (John
6:26)
·
Solomon (Ecclesiastes
2:10)
In these examples, these people had no concern for others, just
themselves. Often selfishness led to other sins.
II.
Problems with “Self”
·
Conceit: Pride, arrogance, haughtiness (Romans
121:3, 16)
God hates arrogance. (Proverbs
6:17)
·
Stubbornness: Self-willed, set on having their own way (Isaiah
48:4, I Samuel 15:23)
·
Self-righteous: Right in your own eyes Pharisee (Luke
18:11)
Our own righteousness (Isaiah
64:6, 65:1, 5)
Holier-than-thou
III.
Solutions to Selfishness
·
Follow examples in the Bible: Paul (Acts
20:22-24)
Good Samaritan (Luke
10)
Christ (Philippians
2:5-8)
·
Esteem others higher than yourself (Philippians
2:3)
·
Deny passions (Galatians
5:24, I Peter 4:2)
Conclusion:
Has this lesson caused you to examine your life? Let us be like Paul in
Galatians 2:20.
“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer in me; and the life
which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who
loved me and gave Himself for me.” NKJV
