Lesson 19 – Solomon (The wise man)

 

Solomon – שְׁלמֹה – Σολομών

 

I) Meaning of the name

A) Solomon (Shelomoh) – שְׁלמֹה – Σολομών

1) Amends (shalam - שָׁלַם)

2) Peaceful (shalom - שָׁלוֹם)

3) Jedidiah – יְדִידְיָה

(a) Beloved of God

(i) beloved Yadid – יְדִידְ and God Ya – יָה.

(b) Why was Solomon given these two names?

(i) Because God told David to name his son Solomon.

· 1 Chronicles 22:9

(ii) God tells Nathan to call Solomon Jedidiah to show God’s favor.

· 2 Samuel 12:25

· As David was after the heart of God, so Solomon was Jedidiah, loved by God.

B) Other names:

1) David – דָּוִד – Δαυίδ

(a) Beloved

2) Bathsheba – בַּת־שֶׁבַע

(a) Daughter of oath

3) Rehoboam – רְחַבְעָ֥ם

(a) A people are enlarged

4) Jeroboam – יָרָבְעָ֗ם

(a) The people increase

5) Queen of Sheba – וּמַֽלְכַּת־ שְׁבָ֗א

(a) Queen of completeness or fullness

(b) That this person is titled the Queen of Sheba, points to this being the Arabian, or Yemenite Sheba.

(i) The African Sheba

(ii) [mqtwyt] ("high official")

(iii) [mlkt] Queen


 

 

 

6) Other gods:

(a) Ashtoreth

(i) Sidonians (Canaanite)

· Israel’s neighbor to the north

(ii) This was considered to be the goddess of love, beauty, and birth.  Represented by a limbless tree trunk planted in the ground, carved with the image of the goddess.

(b) Milcom / Molech

(i) Ammonites

· Israel’s neighbor to the east.

(ii) This was a fire-god with the face of a calf; his images had arms outstretched to receive the babies who were sacrificed to him.

· Amos 1:13

(c) Chemosh

(i) Moabites

· Israel’s neighbor to the Southeast

(ii) Destroyer, possibly fish-god

II) Family Background

A) Solomon was the oldest surviving son of David and Bathsheba.

B) Solomon had three brothers (and probably a few sisters) as well as many half siblings. David’s children born to him while he ruled in Hebron are listed in 2 Samuel 3:2-5.

1) Amnon by Ahinoam the Jezreelitess

(a) Who forced himself on Tamar

(b) And was killed by Absalom

(i) 2 Samuel 13:28-29

2) Chileab, by Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite

3) Absalom the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur

(a) Brother of Tamar

(i) 2 Samuel 13:4

(b) Killed Amnon

(i) 2 Samuel 13:28-29


 

 

 

(c) Exiled

(i) 2 Samuel 13:34

(ii) Forgiven

(iii) 2 Samuel 14:33

(d) Treason

(a) Tries to usurp Solomon’s throne near the end of David’s life

(i) 1 Kings 1

C) And the children born to David in Jerusalem are listed in 1 Chronicles 3:5-9

1) by Bathsheba the daughter of Ammiel

(a) Shimea

(i) The oldest surviving

(ii) Second king of Israel (and this week’s study)

3) And the unnamed (and unnumbered) sons of the concubines

4) So basically, Solomon had a BIG family. And most of them were real troublemakers!

III) Old Testament

A) Chosen to build the Temple

1) 1 Chronicles 22:6-13

B) Declared King by David, and Chosen King by God

1) 1 Chronicles 28:5

C) David charged (challenged) Solomon to walk according to the word of God.

1) 1 Kings 2:1-4

D) Solomon prays for wisdom

1) 1 Kings 3:5-14

2) 2 Chronicles 1:7-12

3) God’s promises here have a condition.

(a) 1 Kings 3:14

4) Solomon’s wisdom was renowned

(a) 1 Kings 4:29-34

(b) 917 of Solomon’s proverbs are in the book of Proverbs

E) The first temple

1) There will be three

(a) Solomon’s temple (while the smallest, it was the most magnificent)

(b) The Second temple (Zerubbabel’s temple)

(c) Herod’s temple (the largest in area)

2) Built upon the land purchased by David at God’s command

(a) 1 Chronicles 21:16-28

(b) 2 Chronicles 3:1-2

3) Solomon tells Hiram the king of Tyre that he is going to build the Temple

(a) 1 Kings 5


 

 

4) The date of the start of construction on the Temple is given which history would put at roughly ~962 BC

(a) 1 Kings 6:1

(b) Construction of the Temple took 7 years

(i) 1 Kings 6:38

(c) The Ark was placed in the Holy of Holies.

(i) 1 Kings 8:6-8

(d) The Lord took residence in the house that had been built for Him.

(i) 1 Kings 8:10-11

(e) God’s second appearance to Solomon

(i) Solomon prays to the Lord upon the completion of the Temple.

· Thanks God

* (1 Kings 6:12-15)

· God to continue to fulfill His word.

* (1 Kings 6:16-17)

· God will listen and forgive

* (1 Kings 6:18-40)

· Rejoicing that the Lord is in His place.

* (1 Kings 6:41-42)

(ii) God’s appearance came with a promise and a condition.

F) Solomon’s sins

1) 1 Kings 10-11

(a) Chapter 10 shows how Solomon appeared to men

(b) Chapter 11 shows how Solomon appeared to God

2) Queen of Sheba’s visit

(a) 1 Kings 10:1-13

(b) 2 Chronicles 9:1-12

(c) She brought riddles, gifts and trade.


 

 

 

(d) She also gave sound advice to Solomon

(i) 2 Chronicles 9:8

(ii) Ethiopian legend: the Queen of Sheba in scripture had a son fathered by Solomon.

3) But all this fame and fortune led Solomon to turn away from God.

(a) Solomon loved women,

(i) 700 wives and 300 concubines

(ii) 1 Kings 11:1-3

(b) God’s commands for kings of Israel

(i) Deuteronomy 17:14-20

· He shall not multiply horses for himself

* Deuteronomy 17:16

* 1 Kings 10:26

· nor cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, for the Lord has said to you, ‘You shall not return that way again.’

* Deuteronomy 17:16

* 1 Kings 10:28-29

· He shall not multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away

* Deuteronomy 17:17

* 1 Kings 11:3

· He shall not greatly multiply silver and gold for himself.

· The king should write a copy of the law and read it daily so that his heart would not turn away from God.

4) The results of Solomon’s sins

(a) The Lord is angered by sin

(i) 1 Kings 11:9


 

 

 

(b) Israel split into two nations

(i) Israel

· the Northern ten tribes

· Jeroboam

(ii) Judah

· Southern two tribes

· Rehoboam

G) Solomon’s death

1) Solomon died after ruling forty years, not quite 60 years old.

(a) 1 Kings 11:41-43

IV) New Testament

A) Christ declares Himself greater than Solomon

1) Matthew 12:42

B) While Solomon was indeed a wise man, Christ is wisdom itself.

1) Colossians 2:1-3

V) Things I hope you learned

A) Our God gives and takes away according to His will, and His Word.

B) If we ask for wisdom, God will provide.

1) James 1:5

C) All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).

D) Solomon is an example that you can have it all on earth and not be happy.

1) The book of Ecclesiastes is written to show how empty a life where one’s achievements on earth are meaningless, but ends with the whole purpose of a man.
