Jesus, The Eternal One

Jesus, The Eternal One

Introduction:

The gospel of John was written to produce faith in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God (John 20: 30-31). So, John begins his gospel with what is called the prologue (verses 1- 18). In this prologue, he makes several claims as to who Jesus was. The first such claim is about his eternality, his preexistence. It is to this claim that we now turn our attention.

Text: John 1: 1-5

Body:

1.  Evidence for Jesus pre-existence

a.  From the prophets

    i.  Micah 5: 2-Messiah to come is everlasting.

ii.  Isaiah 9: 6-7: the coming king is the everlasting father

iii.  Zechariah 2: 10-11 The Messiah is promised to come

b.  Jesus himself

    i.  Jesus existed in Abraham's day- John 8: 56-58

ii.  Jesus before his arrest- John 17: 4-5, 24

iii.  Revelation given to John- Revelation 22: 13

c.  His apostles

    i.  John- 1 John 2: 14 - From the beginning

ii.  Paul- 1 Corinthians 10: 1-4- rock was Christ

Philippians 2: 5-8- existing in the form of God

Colossians 1: 16-17 before all things

d.  the creation

    i.  all things created by Jesus- Hebrews 1: 2-3

ii.  his eternal power and nature- Romans 1: 20

2.  The significance of his pre-existence

a.  He is deity (divine)- John 1: 1-2

He is a member of the Trinity- Matthew 28: 19

He is worthy of our love and devotion- John 20:28

b.  He is alive- John 1: 3-4 in him was life itself

As a result, he gives us hope for our resurrection one day (John 5: 21; 11: 25-26

c.  He is light- John 1: 4-5

We live in a darkened world- darkened due to sin and ignorance (Ephesians 4: 17-19)

Jesus offers us the “light of life” (John 8: 12)

so that we may become “sons of light” (John 12: 35-36)

conclusion:

1.  Some tried to destroy the life and light but failed (John 1: 5)

2.  The choice is ours as to whether we come to the light or stay in darkness (John 3: 19- 21)
