All Hail the Power of Jesus'
Name
A Sermon based on
the Hymn by Edward Perronet
Introduction:
“All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name” is a hymn of reverence and victory.
Rooted in passages like Philippians 2:9–11 and Revelation 5:13, it
celebrates the exaltation of Christ—crowned Lord of all. This song calls
every heart, from angels to sinners to saints, to bow in worship and
crown Him. Whether we sing it in humble praise or triumphant
proclamation, we join a heavenly chorus that acknowledges Jesus Christ
as King of kings and Lord of lords. Are we among those who gladly hail
His name?
Stanza 1: “All
hail the power of Jesus’ name! Let angels prostrate fall…”
The very name of Jesus carries unmatched authority. Philippians 2:9–11
declares that God highly exalted Him and gave Him “the name which is
above every name.” Even angels fall before Him in reverence. In
Revelation 5:11–12, multitudes of angels encircle the throne, crying out
in worship to the Lamb.
Stanza 2: “Ye
chosen seed of Israel’s race, ye ransomed from the fall…”
God’s promises began with Israel, but in Christ, both Jew and Gentile
are included. Romans 1:16 says the gospel is the power of God for all
who believe. We, the redeemed—ransomed by the blood of the Lamb (1 Peter
1:18–19)—are called to crown Him Lord of all through obedience and
praise.
Stanza 3: “Let
every kindred, every tribe on this terrestrial ball…”
This line echoes Revelation 5:9: “Thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us
to God… out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation.” Jesus
is not the Lord of one people—He reigns over all. His universal lordship
demands universal worship. The church is global, united in its devotion
to Christ.
Stanza 4: “Oh
that with yonder sacred throng we at His feet may fall…”
The hope of heaven is the final crescendo of the hymn. Revelation 7:9–10
shows a multitude before the throne, clothed in white, crying out
“Salvation belongs to our God.” The faithful long to join that heavenly
worship, falling at Jesus’ feet and forever praising His name.
Chorus
(sometimes inserted after each stanza): “And crown Him Lord of all!”
This triumphant refrain is the heartbeat of the hymn. To “crown Him”
means to recognize His authority in every part of life—not just in word,
but in deed. Romans 14:9 says Christ died and rose again so He might be
“Lord of both the dead and the living.”

angels worship and whom the redeemed adore will one day judge all
mankind. He invites you now to believe (John 3:16), repent (Luke 13:3),
confess Him (Romans 10:9–10), and be baptized for the remission of sins
(Acts 2:38). Don't wait for judgment to bow—bow now in joyful submission
and live as His servant.
