He Leadeth Me
A Sermon based on the Hymn “He Leadeth Me” by Joseph H.
Gilmore
Introduction:
The Christian walk is a journey filled with choices, challenges, and
changes. We often face uncertainty, but the hymn “He Leadeth Me” reminds
us that God’s guidance is constant, reliable, and perfect. Written in
1862 by Joseph H. Gilmore, this song was born from a meditation on Psalm
23:2—“He leadeth me beside the still waters.” It speaks of a life lived
in daily surrender to the Lord’s direction, trusting that His wisdom
surpasses our own. God’s leading is not just for the great crossroads of
life but for every step along the way (Proverbs 3:5–6). In times of
peace, He guides us gently; in times of trial, He leads us firmly. This
hymn calls us to rest in the Shepherd’s care, to follow His voice with
confidence, and to rejoice in His providential hand. Each stanza affirms
that no matter the season or circumstance, the believer’s security lies
in the One who leads.
Stanza 1
He leadeth
me: O blessed thought!
O words with heav’nly comfort fraught!
Whate’er I do, where’er I be,
Still ’tis God’s hand that leadeth me.
This verse declares
the comfort of knowing God’s hand directs our path. His leadership is
not distant or impersonal—it is intimate and purposeful. Psalm 139:10
assures us that His hand will guide and hold us wherever we go, while
Isaiah 58:11 promises His continual guidance and satisfaction in dry
places.
Stanza 2
Sometimes
’mid scenes of deepest gloom,
Sometimes where Eden’s bowers bloom,
By waters still, o’er troubled sea,
Still ’tis His hand that leadeth me.
Whether we walk
through joy or sorrow, God’s hand remains steady (Isaiah 41:13). “Scenes
of deepest gloom” remind us of His nearness to the brokenhearted (Psalm
34:18). “Eden’s bowers” point to times of abundance, where we must
remember to thank and honor Him (Deuteronomy 8:10–11). Whether in still
waters or stormy seas, He remains sovereign, as seen when Jesus calmed
the storm (Mark 4:39).
Stanza 3
Lord, I
would clasp Thy hand in mine,
Nor ever murmur nor repine;
Content, whatever lot I see,
Since ’tis my God that leadeth me.
Here we hear the
voice of willing submission. “Clasp Thy hand” reflects dependence on
God’s direction (Psalm 25:4–5). “Nor murmur nor repine” calls us to
replace complaint with thanksgiving (1 Thessalonians 5:18). True
contentment, as Paul wrote in Philippians 4:11–13, flows from trusting
God’s plan in all circumstances.
Stanza 4
And when my
task on earth is done,
When by Thy grace the vict’ry’s won,
E’en death’s cold wave I will not flee,
Since God through Jordan leadeth me.
This final verse
assures us that God will lead us even through death. “Task on earth is
done” reminds us of finishing the race (2 Timothy 4:7–8). “Death’s cold
wave” points to the valley of the shadow of death (Psalm 23:4), which
holds no fear for the believer, for Christ leads us safely home (John
14:3; Revelation 7:17).
Chorus
He leadeth
me, He leadeth me,
By His own hand He leadeth me;
His faithful foll’wer I would be,
For by His hand He leadeth me.
The chorus is a
joyful pledge of obedience. It echoes John 10:27–28, where Jesus says
His sheep hear His voice and follow Him, and Romans 8:14, which assures
us that those led by the Spirit are children of God.

Song History:
“He Leadeth Me” was written by Joseph H. Gilmore in 1862 after
delivering a sermon on Psalm 23. He penned the words at a friend’s home,
inspired by the thought that God’s guidance is the believer’s greatest
assurance. William B. Bradbury later set the text to music, and the hymn
has since encouraged countless Christians to trust God’s hand through
every circumstance.
