More About Jesus
A Sermon based on
the Hymn More About Jesus by
Eliza E. Hewitt
Introduction:
“More About Jesus” is a hymn of longing—a personal plea to grow deeper
in knowledge, faith, and love for the Lord Jesus Christ. Written by
Eliza E. Hewitt, this powerful hymn reflects the heart of every disciple
who desires spiritual maturity and closeness with the Savior. It is not
enough to simply know the name of Jesus—we must desire to know more
about His will, His word, His character, and His grace. Each stanza
expresses a holy hunger to be taught by Him, guided by His Spirit, and
changed by His presence.
This song captures
the spirit of Philippians 3:10,
where Paul said, “That I may know Him and the power of His
resurrection.” The more we know about Jesus, the more we trust Him, love
Him, and obey Him. And the more we obey Him, the more He reveals of
Himself to us (John 14:21).
The Christian life is a continual journey of transformation, with Jesus
as both our Teacher and our destination. This hymn is both a prayer and
a declaration: that we are not content with shallow religion or
surface-level faith—we want more of Christ in every area of our lives.
As we meditate on
this hymn, may it stir within us a deeper desire to draw near to Jesus,
listen to His voice, walk in His truth, and become more like Him each
day. May we sing not just with our lips, but with our hearts: “More
about Jesus would I know.”
Stanza One –
“More about Jesus would I know, more of His grace to others show”
The hymn opens with a desire for increased knowledge—not for pride, but
for transformation. 2 Peter 3:18
commands us to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ.” To know more about Jesus is to know more about grace,
because grace is at the center of His gospel. The line “more of His
saving fullness see” reminds us of the richness of salvation. The more
we see of Jesus, the more we reflect Him to others.
Colossians 3:16 teaches us to
let His word dwell in us richly so that we may teach and admonish others
wisely.
Stanza Two –
“More about Jesus let me learn, more of His holy will discern”
This stanza reflects a hunger for spiritual insight.
Romans 12:2 tells us to be
transformed by the renewing of our minds so we may discern the will of
God. Learning more about Jesus includes understanding what He desires
from us and how He wants us to live. The phrase “Spirit of God, my
teacher be” echoes John 14:26,
where Jesus promised the Spirit would teach His followers all things.
When the Spirit teaches us through the Word, we begin to see “showing
the things of Christ to me”—a clearer view of our Savior's nature,
mission, and commandments.
Stanza Three –
“More about Jesus in His Word, holding communion with my Lord”
Here, the focus turns to Scripture and prayer.
John 5:39 says the Scriptures
testify of Christ. The more we study the Bible, the more we encounter
Jesus—not just stories about Him, but communion with Him. The phrase
“hearing His voice in every line” teaches that the Word of God is not
lifeless—it is living and active (Hebrews
4:12). In Scripture, Jesus speaks. When we meditate on the Bible,
we are communing with the Lord. That communion shapes us, builds our
faith (Romans 10:17), and
prepares us for eternity.
Stanza Four –
“More about Jesus on His throne, riches in glory all His own”
This final stanza lifts our eyes to heaven. Jesus is not only our
Savior—He is our reigning King.
Hebrews 1:3 declares that He is seated at the right hand of God,
upholding all things by His power. As we grow in Christ, we desire to
know more about His heavenly reign, His intercession (Romans
8:34), and the glory that awaits the faithful. The line “more of
His kingdom’s sure increase” points to
Isaiah 9:7, which promises of
the Messiah’s government and peace there will be no end. Knowing Jesus
includes understanding the greatness of His eternal kingdom.
Chorus – “More,
more about Jesus”
The chorus emphasizes the repeated, growing desire of the soul. This is
not about temporary emotional excitement but a steady and increasing
passion to draw closer to the Lord.
Psalm 42:1 says, “As the deer
pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God.” The heart
that seeks more of Jesus is never satisfied with less. It is a life of
devotion that prays continually, learns eagerly, and follows closely.

Song History:
“More About Jesus” was written by
Eliza E. Hewitt, a
faithful Christian hymn writer who turned to composing hymns after a
spinal injury limited her physical activities. Through her suffering,
she cultivated a deep love for Jesus and expressed it in song. Her
longing for spiritual depth is evident in this hymn, which continues to
encourage believers to seek a richer relationship with Christ. The tune
was composed by John R. Sweney,
a close collaborator of Hewitt’s and a fellow servant in the Lord’s
work.
