Paradise Valley
A Sermon based on
the Hymn by James D. Vaughn
Introduction:
“Paradise Valley” is a joyful hymn that captures the peace and assurance
experienced by those who walk with God. Written by James D. Vaughn in
the early 20th century, this song expresses the heart of the believer
who finds comfort in God’s presence—both in this life and in
anticipation of the next. Drawing on imagery from Psalm 23 and the
promises of Revelation 21, the hymn reminds us that even now, as we
journey through this world, we can walk in spiritual paradise when we
remain close to the Lord.
This hymn is not an
escape from reality—it is a celebration of what is already true for the
faithful. Though life may bring valleys and shadows, the believer walks
with the Shepherd, and the journey becomes filled with beauty,
assurance, and praise. “Paradise Valley” is not just heaven at the end
of the road—it is the daily life of peace we have when we live by faith
in God.
Let us now walk
stanza by stanza through this beloved hymn and reflect on the beauty of
abiding with the Lord in His Paradise Valley.
Stanza 1: “As I
travel through life, with its trouble and strife, I’ve a glorious hope
to give cheer on the way...”
The hymn begins by acknowledging that life is filled with
hardship—trouble and strife. But the believer is not without hope. Titus
2:13 calls it “the blessed hope” of the glorious appearing of our
Savior. This hope “cheers the way,” giving us strength and perspective
even in the darkest times.
We are not wandering
aimlessly—we are on a journey with a destination. Like Abraham in
Hebrews 11:10, we seek “the city... whose builder and maker is God.”
Because of this hope, the believer can already experience joy and peace,
knowing that something better lies ahead.
Stanza 2: “As I
roam the hillside, or I list to the tide, as I pluck the sweet flowers
that grow in the dale...”
This stanza transitions to the imagery of creation—hillsides, tides, and
flowers. It reminds us that even the natural world declares the glory of
God (Psalm 19:1). For the Christian, even a walk through nature becomes
a reminder of the Creator’s care and the peace that flows from trusting
in Him.
The sweet flowers of
the “dale” symbolize blessings, moments of refreshment, and signs of
God’s presence along the journey. Matthew 6:28–30 reminds us that if God
so clothes the flowers, He surely watches over us. Every step of the
faithful life, even through trials, is softened by His provision.
Stanza 3:
“Though your garden is rare, it is not to compare with the flowers that
bloom in the garden above...”
This stanza compares the beauty of this world to the glory of heaven.
Even the most breathtaking scenes of this life cannot match what God has
prepared for those who love Him. 1 Corinthians 2:9 says, “Eye has not
seen, nor ear heard... the things which God has prepared.”
We enjoy glimpses of
glory now, but the full splendor is yet to come. Revelation 21:4–5
promises a place where all things are made new, where tears are wiped
away, and joy is complete. The flowers of this world fade, but the
“garden above” blooms forever in the presence of God.
Chorus: “Up in
the beautiful Paradise Valley by the side of the river of life...”
The chorus draws directly from Revelation 22:1, where John sees “a pure
river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of
God and of the Lamb.” Paradise Valley is more than metaphor—it is the
eternal home of the faithful.
But in another
sense, Paradise Valley can describe our current fellowship with God.
John 10:10 reminds us that Jesus came to give us life—abundant life—even
now. As we walk in His light (1 John 1:7), we experience peace,
confidence, and contentment that the world cannot take away. We rest in
His shadow now and look forward to perfect joy in the life to come.
