Salvation Has Been Brought Down
A Sermon based on
the hymn by Albert E. Brumley
Introduction
“Salvation Has Been
Brought Down” is a powerful gospel hymn composed by
Albert E. Brumley, best
known for works like “I’ll Fly Away.” In this hymn, Brumley captures the
core of the Christian message: Jesus Christ brought salvation to mankind
through His death, burial, and resurrection. The song bursts with praise
and urgency—calling us to go into all the world with this glorious news
(Mark 16:15–16). It is a hymn of celebration, evangelism, and personal
responsibility.
Rooted in passages
such as Titus 2:11—“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath
appeared to all men”—this hymn reminds us that salvation is not hidden,
distant, or incomplete. It has already been brought down through Christ,
and now we are charged with the mission to carry that message forward.
It’s not just a truth to believe; it’s a truth to
proclaim.
The repeated calls
to “tell it to the world around” echo the Great Commission. The hymn
challenges every Christian to move beyond private faith into active
service. It’s a joyful song, but also a sobering reminder: If we truly
believe that salvation has come, then we must live like it—praising God,
obeying His word, and spreading His message to all who will hear.
Stanza 1
“Jesus gave His life
a ransom yonder on Calvary,
On Mount Calvary, cruel Calvary,
Paved the way by blood that we might win a bright shining crown,
Praise His holy name, salvation has been brought down.”
This stanza begins
at the cross. Jesus, our Redeemer, gave His life “a ransom” (Matthew
20:28). On cruel Calvary, He shed His blood to pave the way to eternal
life. Revelation 2:10 speaks of the “crown of life” promised to those
who are faithful unto death. Through His sacrifice, Jesus made that
crown possible. Salvation is not a human invention—it is a divine gift,
bought with divine blood. And so we praise His name. The door to
salvation stands open, and Christ alone opened it.
Stanza 2
“All alone without a
friend He suffered to pay it all,
Yes, He paid it all, Jesus paid it all,
In His blessed promises sweet victory can be found,
Praise His holy name, salvation has been brought down.”
This stanza reflects
the suffering of Christ and the completeness of His atonement. Isaiah
53:3 describes Him as “despised and rejected of men… a man of sorrows.”
On the cross, even His closest companions had fled. And yet, in that
solitude, Jesus accomplished our redemption. John 19:30 records His
triumphant cry: “It is finished.” He paid it all—not in part, but in
full. Now, in His promises, we find victory. 1 Corinthians 15:57 says,
“Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus
Christ.”
Stanza 3
“There’s a blessed
home prepared way over in glory land,
In bright glory land, blessed glory land,
I have trusted in His love and now I am heaven bound,
Praise His holy name, salvation has been brought down.”
This final stanza
lifts our eyes to heaven. John 14:2–3 assures us that Jesus has gone to
prepare a place for us. The one who died for us now awaits us. The
singer declares personal trust—“I have trusted in His love.” Romans 5:8
tells us, “But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were
yet sinners, Christ died for us.” The result of such trust is the hope
of heaven. As Hebrews 6:19 says, “This hope we have as an anchor of the
soul.” Our destination is secure—not because of who we are, but because
of what Christ has done.
Chorus
“Glory, praise the
Lord, salvation has been brought down,
Go and shout and tell it the world around,
Tell it today, tell it today, tell it tomorrow,
Preach the word of God that we might win a shining crown.”
The chorus is an
explosion of joy and purpose. Like the angels who rejoiced at Christ’s
birth (Luke 2:10–11), we too rejoice that salvation has come. But joy
must be joined with action. Mark 16:15–16 commands us to go into all the
world and preach the gospel. It is not enough to
know the truth—we must
share it. The hymn calls us
to urgency: tell it today, tell it tomorrow. Why? Because people are
perishing, and the crown of life is at stake. The gospel is good
news—but only if it’s delivered in time.

Song History
“Salvation Has Been
Brought Down” was written by
Albert E. Brumley, one of the most prolific gospel songwriters
of the 20th century. Though he is most famous for songs like “I’ll Fly
Away,” this hymn stands out for its theological clarity and evangelistic
fervor. Brumley’s deep understanding of Scripture and love for the
gospel message shine through in every stanza. The hymn is especially
beloved in a cappella churches of Christ, where its rhythmic melody and
strong doctrine make it a congregational favorite. It is more than a
song—it is a call to action, a shout of praise, and a banner for the
redeemed.
