Redemption

Introduction:

Redeem is a word rich in meaning.  In the Old Testament it often meant to restore to an original state.  So a redeemer would not only deliver but also restore.  One could be redeemed from difficulty or danger.  This redemption, though, was costly.  It came at a price, sometimes a very steep price.  The one redeemed was set free by payment of a ransom.  We are reminded of I Corinthians 6:19-20.

     I.  What is the Source of Man’s Redemption?

  • God – Luke 1:68
  • Brought about through Christ – Matthew 20:28
  • Specifically, His blood; “Purchased,” paid the ransom – Acts 20:28
  • Ransom price was precious – I Peter 1:18-19

II. From What Are We Redeemed?

  • Death – Hosea 13:14, Destruction – Psalms 103:4 “who redeems your life from the pit”, Power of the grave – Psalms 49:15 “ransom my soul from the power of Sheol”
  • Power of Sin – Romans 6:17-18, 22, Obedience led them to be baptized into His death. – Romans 6:3-4  It was in His death that His blood was shed, the blood that brings redemption!

   III.  What Does Redemption Provide?

  • Forgiveness of Sin – Ephesians 1:7
  • Justification – Romans 3:24 “not guilty”
  • Purification – Titus 2:14 His own special people, Isaiah 43:1 “You are mine”

   IV.  What Does Redemption Show?

  • God’s love and compassion – Isaiah 63:9
  • Redemption should cause us to rejoice – Isaiah 44:22-23
