The Christ

1. Throughout The New Testament Jesus is referred to as “the Christ.” The apostle Peter made this statement in Matthew 16:16 – “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” This word Christ has the same meaning as the word Messiah. John 1:41 says this about Jesus – “We have found the Messiah (which means Christ).”

I. The Word Defined

1. The basic meaning of Christ or Messiah is “the anointed one.”
2. Several Old Testament offices were anointed.
3. Prophets – I Kings 19:16
4. Priests – Exodus 28:41, Leviticus 4:3
5. Kings – I Samuel 16:1.3, I Samuel 9:16

II. Prophecies about the Anointed One

1. Throughout The Old Testament prophecies are given concerning the future coming of “the anointed one.”
2. Psalms 2:2,7
3. The anointed one would be a prophet. Deuteronomy 18:17-19, Deuteronomy 18:15
4. He would be a priest. Psalms 110:1-4
5. He would be a king. Isaiah 9:6-7, Jeremiah 23:5-6, Psalms 45:6-7

III. Prophecies Fulfilled

1. The people of Jesus’ day were expecting the coming of the Messiah. John 4:25-26
2. Jesus was the fulfillment of David’s prophecy. Psalms 2, Acts 4:25-27
3. Jesus was the spokesman (the prophet) of God. John 12:49-50, John 6:14
4. Jesus was anointed priest through whom all must go to reach the Father. Hebrews 4:14-16, Hebrews 5:5-6, Psalms 110, John 14:6
5. Jesus was anointed king by the Father. Hebrews 1:8-9, Psalms 45,
6. He reigns over His spiritual kingdom. John 18:36-37

CONCLUSION:

Jesus, the Son of God, serves as prophet, priest, and king. As the “anointed one” of God, each of His followers should submit to Him in every area of their lives.
