Redeem is a word rich in meaning. In the Old Testament it
often meant to restore to an original state. So a redeemer would
not only deliver but also restore. One could be redeemed from
difficulty or danger. This redemption, though, was costly. It came
at a price, sometimes a very steep price. The one redeemed was set
free by payment of a ransom. We are reminded of I Corinthians
6:19-20.
I. What is the Source of Man’s Redemption?
God – Luke 1:68
Brought about through Christ – Matthew
20:28
Specifically, His blood; “Purchased,” paid
the ransom – Acts 20:28
Ransom price was precious – I Peter
1:18-19
II. From What Are We Redeemed?
Death – Hosea 13:14, Destruction – Psalms
103:4 “who redeems your life from the pit”, Power of the grave –
Psalms 49:15 “ransom my soul from the power of Sheol”
Power of Sin – Romans 6:17-18, 22,
Obedience led them to be baptized into His death. – Romans
6:3-4 It was in His death that His blood was shed, the blood
that brings redemption!
III. What Does Redemption Provide?
Forgiveness of Sin – Ephesians 1:7
Justification – Romans 3:24 “not guilty”
Purification – Titus 2:14 His own special
people, Isaiah 43:1 “You are mine”
IV. What Does Redemption Show?
God’s love and compassion – Isaiah 63:9
Redemption should cause us to rejoice –
Isaiah 44:22-23
