Humanity
is so blessed to have the Book of Psalms to comfort us, edify us,
admonish us, and teach us.
Psalms 72
paints a glorious picture of the Messiah’s reign.
I. His
Righteous Reign
(Verses
1-7)
Complete
justice and righteousness belong only to God, the divine
nature. (Isaiah
9:6-7)
Righteousness involves reward of good and punishment of wicked.
This results in His subjects serving Him with gladness.
While the
Israelite kings often neglected the poor and needy, the Messiah
would not. (Matthew
11:4-5)
His reign
would usher in a time of peace and harmony in His house. (Isaiah
2:1-4)
His kingdom would not be extended by war or weapons. (Isaiah
11:6-9)
God’s holy mountain is the kingdom of God, the church of our
Lord. (Hebrews
12:22-24)
Citizens of
Christ’s kingdom enjoy peace with God and each other. They are
in Christ, only where forgiveness is found. They have
experienced the new birth and power of the Messiah’s shed blood.
II. His
Universal Reign
(Verses
8-11)
All peoples
are under His authority. (Psalms
2:8,
Matthew 28:18)
His
dominion (Ephesians
1:20-21)
III. His
Merciful Reign
(Verses
12-14)
From a
spiritual perspective, He is a very merciful King.
Jesus died
for the weak. (Romans
5:6)
He redeemed
us who were powerless to redeem ourselves. (Ephesians
1:7)
He gave us
hope. (I
Peter 1:3)
IV.
His
Everlasting Reign
(Verses
15-19)
Psalms 89:36-37,
Revelation11:15
His mighty
name will always be an active force in the world. All who come
to Him will be blessed. (Ephesians
1:3)
