Are We Right Or Are We Taking the Easy Path?

Right or Easy? 

Christian educator and author Howard Hendricks cautions parents not to bribe or threaten their children to get them to obey.  What they need is firm, loving, and at times painful discipline. 

Hendricks recalls being in a home where a bright-eyed grade-schooler sat across the table from him. 

“Sally, eat your potatoes,” said her mother in a proper parental tone. 

Sally winked at Hendricks.  Sure enough, mother removed the potatoes and brought Sally some ice cream.  He saw this as a case of parents obeying their children rather than “Children, obey you parents.”  (Ephesians 6:1) 

Many parents are afraid to do what they know is best for their youngsters.  They’re afraid their children will turn against them and think they don’t love them.  Hendricks says, “Your primary concern is not what they think of you now, but what they will think 20 years from now.” 

Are we right with God or are we taking the easy path?  Doing the right thing is rarely easy. 

Right or Easy? Old Testament Examples 

• Esau (Genesis 25:29-34) Esau chose the easy way when he allowed his immediate fleshly desires (food) to overrule the more important future blessings (birthright).  Today many are involved with drinking or drugs.
• Joseph (Genesis 39:6-10) Joseph made the right choice when he refused to comply with the wishes of Potiphar’s wife.  She didn’t belong to Joseph.  He thought about the eternal consequences.  Today divorce and remarriage are quite common as many choose the easy way.
• Moses (Hebrews 11:23-27) Moses kept focused on the eternal reward.  He knew the pleasures of sin were only temporary.  Today those who profit from cheating and defrauding others only gain temporarily.  Judgment awaits.
• Jeremiah (Jeremiah 20:7-12) Jeremiah was compelled to speak God’s Word regardless of the consequences.  We must as well!

Right or Easy?  New Testament Examples 

• Peter (Acts 4:10-13, 18-20) Peter was much like Jeremiah.  The easy choice would be to keep silent.  Don’t take risks.  But Peter made the right choice.
• Paul (Galatians 2:11-14) Peter made the wrong choice.  Paul made the right choice and had to rebuke a fellow apostle.
• Corinthian church (I Corinthians 5:1-5) The easy way would have been to ignore sin.  They were to practice church discipline.
• Pharisees (Matthew 23:23) It was much easier to tithe herbs than it was to practice justice, mercy, and faith.  Do we only do the easy things and leave the harder things to others?  Do we do the physical things and pass by the spiritual?
