How to Disobey God
Introduction:
Hopefully all of us desire to obey our Heavenly Father and one day to
hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of you
Lord.” But the Bible indicates several different ways in which we can
disobey God. We need to be aware of these so they won’t become our
downfall.
[Adapted from G. Taylor]
Body:
I.
Doing What Is Forbidden
·
The first couple, Adam and Eve, ate forbidden fruit. (Genesis
2:16-17,
Genesis 3:6)
They transgressed God’s will.
·
The sin of commission is going beyond God’s will. It is doing what is
prohibited. (II
John :9)
·
Some believe this is the only way one can disobey God.
II.
Refusing to Do What God Has Commanded
·
Pharisees rejected God’s counsel by not being baptized. (Luke
7:29-30)
·
They disobeyed God by not doing what God told them to do. This is sin
of omission.
·
When you know to do good but don’t do it, it is sin. (James
4:17,
Titus 2:14)
·
One disobeys God when he does not obey the gospel plan of salvation. (Romans
6:17)
III.
Adding to the Word of God
·
The Bible informs the reader what the outcome will be for the one who
adds to the Word. (Deuteronomy;
4:1-2,
Revelation 22:18)
·
Sin is lawlessness. So doing anything for which there is no law or
authority is disobedience. (I
John 3:4)
·
To act or speak where Jehovah has not spoken is a presumptuous sin. (Numbers
15:30-31,
Leviticus 10:1-3)
·
This person presumes to speak for God. This is disobedience. Adding
musical instruments; adding female elders/preachers. . .
IV.
Taking from the Word of God
·
This action produces some terrible consequences. (Deuteronomy
4:1-2,
Revelation 22:19)
·
Not taking the Lord’s Supper every Sunday; not immersing [baptizing] for
forgiveness of sins; not practicing church discipline. . .
V.
Substituting for What God Has Commanded
·
Cain substituted a different sacrifice than that which was commanded. (Genesis
4:3-8,
Hebrews 11:4)
·
God doesn’t accept substitutes. (I
Samuel 15:20-23)
·
Today people make substitutes in the Lord’s Supper, choirs substituted
for congregational singing, sprinkling for baptism. . .
Conclusion:
We must be aware of these ways of disobeying God so that we can make it
to the end.
