The Glory of the Temple

Background:  Jews had been allowed to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple The temple.  They built the foundation and stopped for 15 to 16 years.  Haggai stirs them up and they begin again he delivers four separate messages during a four month period.  Haggai stirs them up and they begin again he delivers four separate messages during a four month. This message, the second about a month after work is restarted During the feast of tabernacles Of tabernacles.  They dwelt in booths which were temporary shelters for seven days.

Text:  Haggai 2:1-9

Body

1.       The temple in the past

a.       Verses one through 3.  Many of older inhabitant remembered glory of solomon's temple and did not feel motivated to work on one which would not be so grand.  Ezra 3: 12, 13.. Seemed insignificant or inferior. Very discouraged. Resources scarce and times were hard.

b.       Vs 4-5 word of encouragement fulfillment of God's promise conditional. Be strong and work

c.       the Lord would be with them as long as they remained active and working toward the goal.

d.       Covenant- Exodus 19:5-6, 29:45-46

2.       Lessons

a.       The outward appearance of the building does not make a church acceptable to God.  God gives the glory.  Authority in worship is not based upon likes or dislikes of people, but God's word.

b.       They divine prescription for spiritual sickness is to get to work 1 Corinthians 15: 58

3.       The temple of the future Haggai I versus 6-9

a.       Jehovah encourages the people by giving assurance of what he purposes to do and what will be the future glory of the House of God, (temple).

b.       The shaking karma see verse 22, occurred by God when nations would rise and fall from the time of hagai to the coming of the Messiah and his Kingdom. Nations- medo- Persian, Greek, Syrian, Egyptian... Note Hebrews 12: 25-29. God shook and removed these heathen nations and also removed the Jewish nation, it's religion. The law of Moses was removed and the temple destroyed. A new Kingdom, the church came into existence. Isaiah 65: 16-19 & Matthew 16: 18-19.

c.       Desire of all nations. People from all nations would come to Jesus and his Kingdom. Acts 2 & Acts 10.

d.       The glory of the latter temple, the one built by Christ, here's church would surpass all prior temples, including Solomons. Isaiah 9: 6-7. It would be more glorious because the Messiah was its teacher and head.

e.       In verse 23, Haggai  spoke of God making Zerubbabel a signet ring. This is a reference to the continuation of david's royal descendant jesus. Second Samuel 7: 12-13 Christ is a descendant of Zerubbabel. Matthew 1: 12, 16.

f.        Give peace, this piece is only found in christ. Ephesians 2: 14-17.

4.       Conclusion

a.       We are very privileged to be in this new temple, the Kingdom of Christ. Let us do all we can to be good citizens of it.
